Thumbs up Zorro laments Pinkie bring Sinkieland to Swaziland standard of living

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

In his final May Day message as NTUC secretary-general, Mr Lim Swee Say told the media on Monday (27 Apr) that Singapore risks regressing to becoming “just a normal country” unless it moves faster to enhance workers’ skills and create new jobs.

The country should also venture ahead of its competitors in weaving technology into manufacturing, services and daily life, he said.

Failing to improve on the skill and job fronts may lead to shortages of both, and a mismatch between those available, he said. This might in turn lead to a rise in unemployment, structural unemployment and underemployment.

“We could then regress and become just a normal country with an ordinary economy and ordinary workforce. This will be painful,” he warned.

However, underemployment can also be caused by a large influx of foreign PMETs into Singapore and presently, there are already signs that this is happening.

Cabby disagrees with NTUC’s assessment

Earlier this month, a cabby wrote in to lambast NTUC’s PME Unit which suggested that 60% of unemployed SG PMEs lack skills (‘More NTUC wayang – 60% unemployed SG PMEs lack skills‘).

“Well, let’s examine our great NTUC’s PME Unit’s statement more closely because what they are saying is that these S’porean PMEs remain unemployed since they do not possess the necessary skills sets. To put it plainly, the NTUC’s PME Unit is saying that we S’porean PMEs have insufficient skills and experience,” he said.

“However, on the other hand, we nowadays see many Indians, Pinoys & Burmese, armed with ‘questionable’ college degrees from literally everywhere including Mumbai, Bombay, Yangon & Manila etc, that come here by the droves on tourist passes & somehow can magically end up with several job offers for PME positions by MNCs in SG & are able to obtain them so easily because they possess the necessary ‘skills’ which our out-of-work S’porean PMEs lack???”

He lamented that some Singaporean PMEs have sent out 500 job applications without getting a single interview whereas “fly-by-night” foreign workers on tourist passes can merely cold-call and walk into the HR offices of these MNCs and literally come away with an offer of employment.

He asked NTUC to stop the “ridiculous wayang” and stop giving the public half-truths.

“The stark truth and reality is that it is truly nothing to do with skills or specific & relevant skills or lack of skills, etc etc. It is because that the employment landscape that the PAP has now created in SG that every MNC or employer just want to employ a foreigner, full-stop! Foreigners come in so easily and in such large numbers so now quality of degrees is no longer important. It all points towards the following criteria…. the foreigners are most likely younger, eager to please, hungrier and most importantly….CHEAPER!” the cabby explained.

“There is no need to pay all the stupid mandatory govt contributions like CPF (17% of gross pay on employers part if employ local), no idiotic job interruptions like going for ICT, IPPT tests, mobilisation exercises & reservist liabilities making the foreign candidates truly free agents when compared to the Singaporeans!”

He added that no matter how skilled or qualified a Singaporean PME is, he or she is still being avoided like the plague by many employers.

“Therefore, even if the S’porean PME attends all the courses under your proposed Skills FutureCredit progam, this same S’porean PME will still not be considered for any job interview when competing against the mass of foreign applicants!!” he said.

“So for all these well-paid civil servants in the NTUC who espouse such ‘wayang’ statements… let me give u a word of warning! One fine day, u too may find yourself out of a job if the govt policies suddenly change & who knows, u may find yourselves out in the mean streets of S’pore without any viable employment alternative. Then after your 500th unsuccessful job application, don’t be surprised if you end up applying for your TAXI Vocational Licence and end up like the rest of us!!!!!”

By the way, the government statistics would consider this cabby as being “employed”.
