Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu

Opening Hours: 10AM-1AM, Daily
Address: Soi 10 Siam Square Pathum Wan, Pathum Wan District, Bangkok 10330
Telephone: +66-9-5-205-2253
Nearest Train Station: BTS Siam

The aroma of pork roasting on the wok will have your mouth watering before you even enter this funky eatery from chef Andy Yang. The pork – quality char-grilled pork loin slice – tops savoury Pad Thai in the recommended signature Pad Thai Fai Ta Lu Moo Yang (roasted pork Pad Thai).
Anyone with an on-point pad Thai radar will tell you that greatness is made in the wok. Real flames—intense, one foot high and licking the inside of the pan—are essential for imparting that rich, smoky flavor that the Khaosan sidewok masses have forgotten about. The smokiest of them all might well be Pad Thai Fa Ta Lu (literally: “Pad Thai through flames”), a discreet Old Town shop-house that’s been reinvented by Andy Yang, a Thai-American chef whose New York restaurant Rhong Tiam won a Michelin star.

Guests arrive to the sight of a downstairs fireshow from the kitchen’s overworked ring-burners. Above the action sits a dining room that feels more like a local dive bar with its strings of neon fairy lights and mismatched furnishings. Michelin, this ain’t, but Pad Thai Fa Ta Lu won Bib Gourmand recognition in the 2019 guide. Michelin tells readers that Andy’s pad Thai has been “jazzed up,” but that’s a bit misleading.

The recipe here is classic, only with an adherence to GMO-free ingredients and quality proteins that you rarely find on the street. Berkshire pork is the star of the menu, more commonly listed locally by its Japanese name kurobuta (literally “black pig”) and renowned for its high content of deliciously savory fat. Here it gets deep-fried into sinful chunks of sticky-crunchy moo krob or grilled on charcoal then sliced on tamarind-wood cutting boards.

The menu lists just four pad Thais that range in price from B75-185. Reviewers on Facebook will tell you that Pad Thai Fa Ta Lu is expensive. Ignore them. B75 is more than good value for one portion of these gooey glass noodles, rich with the natural sweetness of a well-balanced tamarind paste and deeply imparted with that smoky wok flavor.

More expensive plates from the pork neck to the grilled prawns justify their price with ample and high-quality proteins. We dined as a pair and left with a bill of just B500.

Our meal also included a side dish of confit grilled chicken for B160. Though moist and plump, we’ll admit to preferring the barbecued skin of regular street-food gai yang.

What our bill didn’t include was any beer. Pad Thai Fa Ta Lu’s drinks menu is completely teetotal for now, though they’ll happily let you bring in adult refreshments from the nearby 7-Eleven.

The legendary beef soup of Chew Nuea Wua Raitiamtarn returns.

The old Chinatown neighborhood of Woeng Nakorn Kasem may have vanished, but the legendary beef soup of Chew Nuea Wua Raitiamtarn is being kept alive thanks to the grandson of the restaurant's original owner.

At Ten Suns' revamped shop-house, Chanyanpat Tiveschayun continues to season and braise his beef for 4-5 hours in accordance with his grandfather's recipe.

He also has formidable backing in Seven Spoon’s chef-owner Somkiat Pairojmahakij and indie band Apartment Khunpa’s guitarist, Gun “Ball” Rujinarong. Order your bowl of beef soup (B80) with brisket, plate and shank, or go with a bowl of each separately (B100-120).

Thip Samai Pad Thai
Opens: (NIGHT TIME) Daily, 5:30pm ”“ 1:30am
Area: Phra Nakhon
Address: 313 Maha Chai Road, Samran Rat, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok

If you google for Pad Thai in Bangkok, almost every single blog is about Thip Samai. I have been here many times since 20 years ago and I know why it’s so popular. Thip Samai is touted the Best Pad Thai in Bangkok by both foreigners and locals and they have come a long way since its opening in 1966 (close to 50 years of history). There are many variations of Pad Thai here and the most popular is “The Superb Pad Thai”ť with prawns wrapped in omelette. I must say that during my recent trips here, the standard is not consistent. But still, any of them will still be better than the ones you find in Singapore. Another reason I find myself coming back here because of their Orange Juice with lots of chunky pulp. To get here, please tell the taxi driver “Pratu Phi Pad Thai”. They will give you a blur face if you say Thip Samai.

To get here, you have to tell the taxi driver “Pratu Phi Pad Thai”. If you happen to be near the old town of Bangkok, Yaowarat (Chinatown) or Khao San road, it’s actually quite near to Thip Samai.

So is this really the best pad thai in Bangkok. Well, it’s subjective and I really urge you to come and try it for yourself! 🙂

Krua Apsorn (Sam Sen)

Samsen Road
Samsen 1 Alley, Wat Sam Phraya
Phra Nakhon, Bangkok
Tel: +66 2 668 8788
Mon to Sat: 10.30am – 7.30pm

This two-decade-old, family-run shophouse has won favour with just about everyone who has eaten chef Chanchawee’s cooking, including the Thai royal family. The raison d'ętre for making the pilgrimage here is the decadent stir-fried crab with yellow chilli and the famous fluffy crab omelette. Start there, and if hunger persists.

Krua Apsorn is somewhere that only locals and foodies in-the-know head to. It serves simple but supremely delicious Thai food at pocket-friendly prices. If you haven’t been there before, mark it down in your itinerary, for the next time you are in Bangkok, you know you will be in for a treat at Krua Apsorn.

The signature Stir-fried Crab in Curry Powder (THB 400) is one of the best stir-fried crab dishes that we’ve had in Thailand, and definitely a must-order when dining at Krua Apsorn. It also comes in a spicier version – the Stir-fried Crab with Yellow Chilli (THB 400). Pay attention to the tables around you and you would realize that every table has the stir-fried crab dish.

Krua Apsorn has several branches in Bangkok, but go to the original outlet at Samsen Soi 9 – located just north of the National Library in the old town of Bangkok. Getting there can be quite a challenge because it is relatively inaccessible, but if you are planning to make a trip to visit Dusit Palace or Khao San Road (the backpackers’ district in Bangkok), then it is in the vicinity; just approximately 10 minutes away. Of course, when in doubt, just hail a cab. The journey from the main Siam area is about 20 minutes without traffic.

If Krua Apsorn was located near Siam or Sukhumvit, we would dine here every day whenever we are in Bangkok.

Also there was a very good late night shop in Mengjai I was taken to but can’t remember the exact location. Anybody may have an idea?much appreciated will be visiting soon.

Khao Kha Moo Trok Sung

Address: 23 ซอย ราชดำริ1 Khwaeng Lumphini, Khet Pathum Wan, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10330, Thailand
Opening Hours: | Mon to Sat: 8am to 5pm | Sun: CLOSED |

Hidden Gem Serving Delicious Pig Trotter Rice Near Platinum Mall.

Khao Kha Moo Trok Sung is a small restaurant in Bangkok that sells delicious Khao Kha Moo, which is Thai for pig trotter rice. This simple dish consists of braised pork leg served over rice.

It is located along an obscure street near Platinum mall and we managed to find it without much difficulty using Google Maps.

This hole-in-the-wall joint consists of a modest indoor space and a small outdoor dining area. The wife and I went on a weekday at 11am and there weren’t many customers around.

The restaurant was opened by Mr Tang over 20 years ago. He is in his 60s today but looks younger than his actual age. According to him, he maintains his youthful demeanour by eating one pig trotter a day. Sounds more like a recipe for high cholesterol though.

According to Mr Tang, the aromatic braising sauce is stewed for at least three hours daily using over ten ingredients.

Khao Kha Moo Trok Sung is located in a quiet street beside SuperRich Currency Exchange, near Platinum Mall and Central World. From Platinum Mall, you just need to walk for about 5 minutes to reach the restaurant.
The staff were all quite friendly, and our food arrived promptly after ordering.

Nai Mong Hoi Thod 蚵仔煎

539 Phlap Phla Chai Rd, Khwaeng Pom Prap, Khet Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10100, Thailand (Wat Mangkon MRT, Blue Line)
Tel: +66 89 773 3133
Opening Hours: 11am – 8:30pm (Tue – Sun), Closed Mon

The Best Crispy Oyster Omelette You Can Find At Bangkok Chinatown.

Owned by a certain Mr. Mong, this Chinatown eatery has been in operation for more than 30 years.

Nai Mong Hoy Tod (นายหมงหอยทอด) serves a very tasty version of hoy tod (หอยทอด), and if you like this dish, this is a definite place you must check out.

If you’re not so much into oily and greasy food, you should stay far away.
His recipe has never changed throughout the decades, though he has passed the cooking to an apprentice who maintains his standards.

Even until Michelin Guide took notice and awarded it the Bib Gourmand distinction.

This specialty of the house is made with fresh oysters fried ‘til crisp with egg and a sticky sauce. But in case you don’t want oysters, opt for the mussels instead.

Nai Mong Hoi Thod is a humble-looking eatery located within walking distance Wat Mangkon MRT.

Nai Mong Hoy Tod (นายหมงหอยทอด) is located just a 5 minute walk from Yaowarat Road, on the more local side, just off Chaoen Krung road. Go down Phlap Phla Chai about 20 meters, and the restaurant is on your right hand side.
It is so inconspicuous-looking that you may walk past without noticing, except that it does have quite a crowd of customers within.

Rung Reung (荣泰)

What to Order: Tom Yum Noodle With Soup (THB 60), Fish Cracker (THB 20)
Address: 10/3 Sukhumvit Soi 26 Road, Bangkok, Thailand
Opening Hours: Daily 8.30am to 5pm
Phone: +662 258 6746

The restaurant is a short four-minute walk from Phrom Phong BTS station (Exit 4). It is beside the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Sukhumvit Bangkok.

Famous Tom Yum Pork Noodles at Sukhumvit Soi 26, Delicious Street Food!

Rung Reung (also known as Rung Rueang or Rung Ruang) is a small Sino-Thai restaurant in Bangkok that serves tasty and affordable Thai style pork noodles, similar to Singapore’s Teochew Bak Chor Mee.

We were surprised to find two restaurants with the exact same name upon arriving. It turns out that after the original proprietor died, his two sons took over the family business and expanded the space.

However, they got into a family dispute, which resulted in a partition being built in the middle of the expanded restaurant. Today, the “original” Rung Reung is the one at the corner with the blue canvas, while the adjacent one has the red canvas.

The original restaurant is supposed to serve better tasting noodles, but has a smaller seating capacity. The other restaurant has the “Shell Shuan Shim” award, which is the Thai equivalent of Michelin Star.

However, do not fret too much about which restaurant to eat at, because according to online reviews there isn’t much difference between the two.

Do take note that both joints are extremely popular with locals, so you should ideally visit before 11.30am or after 1pm to avoid the lunch crowd.

We were lucky enough to get seats straightaway at the original restaurant when we arrived on a Thursday at around 1pm.

The restaurant was packed with locals and we were probably the only tourists inside – which is always a good sign!

The level of service was better than what I had expected from a dingy street side restaurant, and our food came very promptly after ordering. Some of the staff spoke English too.

It was worth checking out the delicious noodles at Rung Reung. While the Tom Yum noodles didn’t blow me away, it was still quite satisfying. Note that the restaurant closes early at 5pm every day.

Mr. Meng (Taweesak) Fishball Noodles (Hia Meng Fish Ball Noodles (Taweesak))
Operating Hour: 10am to 7pm daily
Address : 627 Charoen Krung Rd, Samphanthawong, Bangkok 10100, Thailand

This street-stall hawker serves quite a delicious fishball noodles, albeit a bit too salty in my experience. But still, a not-too-bad meal that I don’t mind going back while in the area and try again. The location and the placement of the stall are right on the street, giving you an exciting vibe of eating on the street ha ha. I am a broth fanatic, but I found their broth here downright salt-salty, hence I like their dry version much better. Order one with a wide rice noodle with all the fishballs (especially the fish wontons), and I hope you like the flavours and aroma of toasted garlic oil (kratiem jiew).

Not too far from Wat Traimitr (The Golden Buddha Temple) of the Chinatown Bangkok is this street food stall that specialises in fishball noodles. The most coveted item seem to be their fish wontons. I love everything about this place. Clean enough place, albeit on the street with limited access to running water, but clear broth and good fishballs. The overall taste, on the day of our visit, was a tad too salty sometimes. But still, a great choice for the area

Ann Guay Tiew Khua Gai

Address: 419 Luang Rd, Wat Thepsirin, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Bangkok 10100, Thailand
Phone: +66 2 621 5199
Operating hour: 2pm to 11pm daily

My absolute favorite place to go for authentic ก๋วยเตี๋ยวคั่วไก่ Guay Tiew Kua Gai (lit trans: Noodle Mix Chicken, aka Yummy Noodle Goodness)! The noodles are crispy and fragrant from the burning hot fire yet bouncy at the same time because of the freshness of the noodles. It’s only open in the evening so make sure you grab a plate of noodles with chicken, marinated squid and eggs for dinner!

Fried noodles are a ubiquitous street dish, but they’re taken to another level here. Whether ordered crispy with a fried egg or soft with a runny egg, they retain a soft texture on the inside and a crispy exterior that isn’t oily. Munch on crispy chicken skin and cool off in the air-con.

Chakki, Bangkok

Tel: +66 2 245 0849
Opening Hours: 11:00am – 3:00pm (Mon – Sun) (May close earlier when sold out, closed every first Mon of the month)

Michelin-Recommended Beef Horfun And Thai-Style Wanton Noodles, Near Victory Monument.

Chakki, on Rang Nam Road in Bangkok’s Chinatown, is renowned for its thick gravy sauce – a salty and sweet concoction – on its lad na (deep-fried noodles). Slick beef or pork slices can be added, along with a helping of vegetables and, if you like, a side of crispy fried wontons. The same family has run Cantonese Chakki for 30 years, and they’re so confident in their perfected dishes that they don’t refer to recipes or offer a menu.

Jakkee Restaurant ภัตตาคารจ๊ากกี่, also written as “Chakki” is located at Ratchawithi Soi 7, a 15 minutes’ walk from Victory Monument BTS station.

The shop used to be from Chinatown, and has been at this location for more than 30 years.

Therefore, it is not surprising to find the slightly older generation dining here, reading their newspapers or elderly couples reminiscing their good-old days.

It looked like the typical Chinese-Cantonese eatery in Bangkok, though you would notice it is unusually crowded even before lunch time.

For tourists, do not worry as there is an English menu, and one English-speaking member of the family (though she is always running around).

I know the food is considered pricier than the average and service is brisk, but the quality of the ingredients used, and oh that sauce, and the history of Chakki makes it quite a worthy to visit place for “Rad-Nha” lovers.

How to get there:
The restaurant is located in the Ekkamai area of Bangkok on Ekkamai Soi 18. It’s a few kilometers from the Ekkamai BTS station, so from the BTS, you can either take a taxi, a bus, or a motorbike to Soi 18 and then look for that yellow and red sign (picture above).

Thai Beef Noodles at Wattana Panich, Ekkamai (วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ)

No words are necessary here…

I’m just going to give you a moment to dwell upon one of the most beautiful swimming pools of slow bubbling cubes of beef you may have ever seen…

It was one of the most amazing I had seen.

Just look into the face of that jacuzzi of tenderly stewed beef love, of meat, fat, spices, and juices that looks like they’ve been boiling in the same cauldron for centuries.

(NOTE: Wattana Panich seems to be the most common English spelling, but really the Thai pronunciation would be more like “paneed” with a very soft d ending)

It’s a jaw dropping pan of meat that greets you as you enter Wattana Panich (วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ), one of the most famous beef noodle restaurants in Bangkok.

Just walking in, and seeing the beef, is enough to make you realize why it’s such a famous restaurant to eat beef noodles in Bangkok.

Actually, years ago, I had written an article and made a video about a beef noodle spot on Udom Suk. Someone had commented, saying I need to try the restaurant on Ekkamai, and it took a few years to finally get here, but I’m thrilled I did.

Wattana Panich (วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ) is most famous for kuay teow neua, or Thai beef noodles.

They are located in the Ekkamai area of Bangkok, housed in an old-school Chinese shophouse that has fantastic character to it.

The interior of Wattana Panich (วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ) is exactly what you should be looking for in a good restaurant in Bangkok.

I’m talking about well used tables and chairs, antiques on the walls, clutter everywhere, and just ancient looking everything – there was a stash of beer under my table, so I couldn’t sit straight in the table, and that’s exactly the type of little sign I love when eating a top-notch restaurants.

Wattana Panich (วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ) attracts some pretty cool, stunna shades rockin’ customers too – everyone from Chinese men to foreigners, ready to get their fix of tender beef and goat.

Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส)

Address: Soi Phiphat 2, Silom, Bangkok 10500
Open hours: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm daily
Price: About 40 – 50 THB per dish

ที่อยู่ ซอยพิพัฒ 2 สีลม บางรัก กรุงเทพมหานคร 10500
โทร. 085-999-4225
เปิดบริการทุกวัน 8.30 – 16.30 น.

How to get there: Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) is located on Soi Phiphat 2, right off Soi Convent in Silom. It’s just a 5 minute walk from Sala Daeng BTS station.

Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) is a very popular Isaan restaurant located right in the downtown business district of Silom, in Bangkok.

If you go at the peak of lunch on a weekday, expect it to be packed out – and big groups of office workers also often call ahead to reserve tables. So if possible, try to show up a little before lunch, at about 10:30 am or 11 am to get a table quickly.

The restaurant looks like little more than the front of a garage from the outside, but they have a few tables set up outside on the street, plus a section inside the patio, and then more tables set up inside the parking lot of the house.

At the front of Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) you’ll see the green papaya salad ingredients on the left side, where they prepare all the salads, and a cabinet full of grilled meat and an assortment of pots that include soup broth on the right hand side.

The owners are all very friendly, and it’s one of those restaurants in Bangkok that even though you’re right in the middle of downtown, you’re down a quiet relaxing side street.

Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) is a local Isaan restaurant in the Silom area of Bangkok, that I think serves some of the best som tam (green papaya salad) in the city.

Their different versions of green papaya salad are outstanding, fiery hot, pungent with fermented fish sauce, and overall just thrilling to the taste buds. They also serve an assortment of other Isaan dishes, especially excellent chicken wings and grilled pork neck.

For myself, eating som tam at Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) is about as close as you can get to eating in Isaan while still being in Bangkok.
