Would you back off and try to maintain a distance?

Depends on what you want. If you don't want to get involved, then just slowly back off..that girl will notice it and understand without saying..if you want something out with that girl, then based on my own experience, don't declare your affection, don't make it official, just go with the situation, because the moment you make it official, that girl might feel stressed and eventually leave because she doesn't want to be the third party. Just go with the flow. Whether hug, kiss, petting or sex, just don't make it official..
