Re: Medical Advisor for the 40+

Syphilis

WHAT IS IT?

Syphilis is caused by a organism called a spirochete which thrives in warm, moist environments. Though still uncommon, it has the most rapidly rising incidence in the UK and is spreading particularly fast in cities such as London and Manchester. Oral sex is the major means of transmission in the UK.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’VE GOT IT?

Unfortunately 50% of people who have syphilis don’t even realise they have it. Symptoms include a sore called a chancre which will appear 10 days - 3 months after contact. These sores are usually painless and can appear on the lips/mouth as well as the genital areas. The next stage of syphilis begins 6 weeks - 6 months after the initial infection. Symptoms may include headache, fatigue, low grade fever, skin rash and enlarged lymph nodes. Condylomata (raised growths which are flat topped moist and grey in colour) may appear at this stage; these can ooze fluid and are extremely contagious.
After this stage has passed there comes a latent stage which can last from several months to 20 years. During this period there may be no outward signs of syphilis. However, the disease is quietly destroying the inner tissues and organs. Syphilis lesions increase the danger of becoming infected with HIV by 9 times.

CAN IT BE TREATED?

Syphilis can be effectively killed off by a course of penicillin or other antibiotics but if left untreated, the disease can be very serious.

Re: Medical Advisor for the 40+

FAQ on STD

Q1. Are AIDS tests free and where do you get them?

A. Most GP’s, family planning clinics and genito urinary clinics (GUM) have the facilities to perform AIDS/HIV tests.

Q2. Can you get a disease from oral sex?

A. Yes, it doesn’t take full penetrative vaginal intercourse to pass on some diseases. Many can be caught through other sexual contact as "skin to skin" or "fluid/fluid" contact results in possible transmission of the infective agent.

Q3. Are there any risks if you have been fingered?

A. Yes there are risks. If there is any sperm on the hands there can be a risk of pregnancy as well as a risk of infection.

Q4. When you have got a white discharge does this mean that you have a sexually transmitted disease? How do you get rid of white discharge?

A. Women get a white discharge generally in the middle of their cycle (between 2 periods) when they release their eggs i.e. ovulate. Some women ovulate at different times in their cycle so this discharge is perfectly normal; it will be white or clear in colour. However if you are experiencing an itchiness or stinginess and your discharge is yellow or smells then it may be that you have picked up an infection and you would need to visit your GP just to make sure. Is the discharge different from your normal discharge? Could you have picked up an infection?

Q5. What does VD mean?

A. VD is the old term for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's). It stands for Venereal Disease and was usually taken to mean Syphilis or Gonorrhoea.

Q6. I have wee small lumps on my penis which look like goosebumps. I am worried that they might be genital warts but I haven't had sex before. Could it still be genital warts even though i haven't had sex?

A. Genital warts are passed by skin-to-skin contact with someone else who is infected with the genital wart virus. If you haven't had sex and have had no genital skin contact with someone else then you have no risk of having contracting genital wart virus.
The little goosebumps you have on your penis are almost certainly nothing to worry about. If they are still present in a number of weeks it might be best to attend a GP to be examined for 100% reassurance. Certainly from your history of not having had sex you can be reassured that they are not genital warts.

Q7. Yesterday I noticed a spot/wart on the shaft of my penis near the scrotal sack. I haven't had unprotected sex. I wondered if it could possibly be a spot or if I somehow have genital warts? I was wondering what the effect of genital warts are if untreated?

A. If the spot/wart is under the area covered by the condom and there has been no condom accidents then it probably isn’t a genital wart. The virus as discussed at the presentation is all over the genital skin and direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person is what causes the infection to be passed on. There are a number of other simple non-sexually transmitted “spots/cysts” that can appear on the penis and these usually go away themselves with or without treatments.
My advice if you have been sexually active would be to attend a GP (it does not even need to be your own) or a family planning clinic that can check the spot/wart and let you know exactly what it is. Any of these doctors will see you completely confidentially and can reassure and/or treat as appropriate.

Q8. I get a whitish/yellow discharge and get itchiness around my vulva, I've been to my GP and have been treated for possible thrush, but the problem has not gone away. I'm embarrassed to go to my doctor again and i think that the problem may be crabs. I believe that symptoms of crabs may be little nits or eggs in your under wear - I don't know what these look like but i always get little bluish fluffy things in my underwear and sometimes small black dots...could this be crabs? Could crabs cause the itchiness and discharge and i also notice my vulva is very red.

A. Thrush is a common cause of an itching vulva and GPs often think of this diagnosis first. The white discharge would fit this cause. However pubic lice (crabs) and scabies can also cause intense itching and your GP might not consider these unless you mention them as a possibility. Crabs often cause tiny blue spots or bite marks and what you describe could fit with this.
The vulval itching could also be caused by a skin disorder such as eczema and may not be sexually transmitted at all, or your symptoms might be due to a mixture of the above causes.
It is very important that you do get a precise diagnosis and I would suggest that you either return to your GP with this e-mail or mention the other possible causes you are worried about, or visit the genito-urinary medicine clinic (sometimes called an STI clinic) at your local hospital. You may take a friend with you if this makes it easier. Locations of clinics are usually in your local telephone directory.

Q9. My partner had sex before we met, way back in 1996. She only had it once. Could she have become infected at this time?

A. Even if it was “way back in 1996”, if the other person was infected your partner could have contracted a sexual infection. Certainly condoms if they were used could have reduced the risk but would not completely remove the risk (particularly human papilloma virus or genital wart virus and genital herpes).
Some of the infections do not give symptoms for quite some time and certainly for peace of mind where someone has had previous partners testing for sexually transmitted infections can be helpful. If you both are clear and remain faithful to each other lifelong then you both can relax concerning sexually transmitted infections in the future.

Q10. Can any STI's be transferred if the boy masturbates the girl or vice-versa?

A. Some of the STI's can be transferred by direct skin to skin contact without full intercourse. If there is skin to skin contact then human papilloma virus (wart virus) or genital herpes could be passed one to the other if present?

Q11. With genital warts do they hurt for women? Do they have a colour or a smell? Can it be cured? How do you know if you have a wart without having to go to a clinic?

A. Genital warts are caused by infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and are the commonest sexually transmitted disease in the UK.
They are usually colourless or white and can vary from a 1mm in diameter for a single warts to large crops of warts covering the vulva. They do not smell but can be transmitted along with other infections which can cause a smell so a dual infection is a possibility.
They can be diagnosed and treated by a GP and can be treated with great care at home with a cream called Podophyllotoxin (NOT Podophyllin itself which is very dangerous to use unsupervised at home). However, if there is doubt about the diagnosis or other infections being present - a visit to a gynae or GU specialist may be needed.
One final important point is that condoms offer little or no protection against HPV transmission so you may remain at risk of spreading the infection even after treatment

安全性行爲指南

(1)在性行爲之前,就應該考慮艾滋病預防問題;

No link seen in busy sex life and prostate cancer

International Herald Tribune

Wednesday, April 7, 2004

Drug delivers one-two punch for longer-lasting sex
Men who enjoy an active sex life need not fret that their sexual activities will put them at risk of prostate cancer later in life, according to a study made public Tuesday.

A study of almost 30,000 American men found no link between frequency of ejaculation and risk of prostate cancer, contrary to much previous research on the subject.

The results of the largest epidemiological study to date on the association between ejaculation and this type of cancer found quite the reverse.
An analysis of mens' sexual histories and the incidence of prostate cancer in the group suggested that frequent ejaculation may have some modest beneficial or protective effect in connection with prostate cancer.
"Our results suggest that high ejaculation frequency possibly may be associated with a lower risk" of prostate cancer, said Michael Leitzmann, chief investigator and cancer researcher with the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

The link between ejaculation and cancer of the prostate - the most common type of cancer among men in industrialized nations - has long been a matter of dispute.

An influential study in the journal Epidemiology published in 2002 concluded that there was an increased prostate cancer risk with greater sexual activity based on a review of existing data. Scientists who support this theory point to the fact that the male hormone testosterone is known to promote the growth of prostate cancer cells.

But Leitzmann's study found that men who ejaculate 13 times a month or more, are much less likely to develop prostate cancer later in life than men who only do it four to seven times a month.

Men who reported ejaculating between 13 and 20 times a month had a 14 percent lower lifetime risk of getting the cancer than the four to seven times a month group.

The most-sexually active group surveyed for the study - men who said they ejaculated at least 21 times a month on average for most of their adult lives - had a 33 percent lower lifetime risk than the baseline group.
"It's premature to recommend that men alter their sexual habits to protect their health," said Leitzmann, "but the findings warrant further investigation. We need more basic science studies looking at the physiological mechanisms at work here."

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, drew on data from predominantly white professional males called the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. The 29,342 men enrolled in the study were aged 46 to 81 years and described their sexual histories through questionnaires that preserved their anonymity.

Prostate cancer typically afflicts men in their 70s and while it responds well to treatment it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men.

More men turning to illegal sex stimulants

The Star Online
April 11, 2004

PETALING JAYA:

The black market for medical products in the country is growing because more Malaysian men are turning to illegal sex stimulants, said a Health Ministry official.

The Health Ministry’s Pharmaceutical Services Division director, Datuk Mohd Zin Che Awang, said some RM9mil of the RM14.98mil worth of unregistered drugs seized by the division between January and February were sex stimulants.

“There is an increasing demand from Malaysian men seeking to boost their sex drive and the illegal industry takes this opportunity to manufacture these drugs to fulfil the demand,” he said yesterday after giving a briefing on the growing threat of unregistered drugs in the country.

He said most of the drugs seized lately contained Tadalafil and Sildenafil, both chemicals widely used to treat impotence.

The illegal sex stimulant industry was not only thriving on local demand but from those abroad, he said.

“We have received complaints from as far as Bahrain about Tongkat Ali Plus, which is exported from Malaysia.”

The product is believed to have tested positive for Sildenafil, a scheduled poison.

The Drug Control Authority would like to advise the public against using Shitek Tongkat Ali 400mg and Longeria Capsules as they could endanger health, said Mohd Zin. – Bernama

Re: Medical Advisor for the 40+

Liver Health

HOW TO PROMOTE LIVER HEALTH

1. Lungs & Big Intestines share the system . If one or the other is infected or sick , the other will also be sick.

2. When the Liver is in pain, there are not many signs or symptoms
to be detected. Before many cancers happen, usually the Liver will be the first to get sick.

3. Liver filters out the poisons and it attacks all other viruses
in the body.

4. 99% Chinese have weak livers as they eat a lot of meat and
high fat foods.

5. The Liver 's repair time is effective from 11pm - 3am.
Therefore, sleeping late after 11pm & having late night supper 2 hours before sleep especially of high cholesterol and high fat foods weakens the Liver as it does not have sufficient time to rest and regenerate. Even when one sleeps in later in the morning to replace loss sleep will not help.

6. If U get very hungry just before bedtime, eat some fruits & vegetables which are easy to digest. Meat takes about 4 hours to digest before it goes into the intestines. Meat cooked in oil takes about 12 hours before going into the intestines. This will provoke the Liver & the digestive tract to overwork in filtering the toxins thus U will tend to feel very tired when U wake up in the morning.

7. Oil is the main culprit that will weaken the functions of the Liver and damage it. Medication cannot cure Liver problem and it will damage it even further.

8. Cold-pressed Olive oil , carrot, cucumber, raw chili, garlic, onion, little bamboo salt/ sea-salt, radish, pumpkin and small fish are good for the body. Sesame oil is ok.

9. Food-preservatives , Food colourings , Bee Hoon is processed
with Aluminium (causes Dementia) , Bleach, syrup, Pesticides are bad for Liver health. Wrong medication can shrink and damage the Liver badly.Radiation from Microwave oven destroys all nutrients in the food.

10. Western medication is bad for the Liver. Chinese medication is bad for Kidney. White radish will disable the effects of the Chinese medication.

11. Sleeping late for children is unhealthy as it weakens memory and intelligence.

12. Best Healthy times to sleep is 9pm especially so for people who are sick or recovering and do not sleep later than 11pm. Lots of rest is good for the Liver to recover. When using eye-cover during bed-time , use only pure-cotton and do not use Rubber, latex material.

13. A Detoxification Diet helps the Liver & Intestines to recover fast. Natural fresh foods are best for the Liver and overall well being.
Do not rely on packed , bottled or canned health foods/ vitamins as they lack a lot of natural and essential vitamins which can only be derived from pure, unprocessed natural foods.

14. A balance of mental/ emotional state of mind is very important to the total well-being. Too much Stress of all kinds, loud noises/music, anger, irritation suppressed for too long, pessimism, depressive moods, no goals in life, feeling life has no value or blaming the World & Everyone else for his life will further weaken the body system. When the Liver is unhealthy, the Person usually has a bad temper and gets easily angered or irritated.

15. Giving out gas, perspiration and urine are ways of purging out the toxins from the body. Do not use too much of air-conditioning as it suppresses the body from perspiration. This natural way of purging helps to reduce the load of the Liver. Open the windows for fresh air.

16. Give warmth to any part of the body that is in pain will help ease it or soaking in a bathtub of warm water up to waist level will also help. Be careful if U have heart problems , do not soak up to heart level or else U might feel uncomfortable as your heart might get too stimulated.

17. Brown rice , wheat, oats, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yam and maize ut we must be careful when buying these foods as they contain great amount of Pesticides. Maize and Brown rice contains B complex vitamin but be careful as Maize these days , has a lot of Pesticides in them too. Organic foods are better alternatives but they are more costly.

18. Blood A type has higher chances of Cancer diseases.

19. Blood O type has higher chances of Liver diseases.

20. Women Live Longer because they are more even-tempered due to their menstruation cycle expels the anger suppressed inside. It is better not to talk when a person is feeling very angry at that point of time.
Breathe very slowly for 7 times and just smile.

21. Fat or overweight people usually have problems with their liver, heart and digestive system as they eat too much meat , high cholesterol and high fat foods which will damage their Liver and thus affect their heart and blood pressure.

22. Gastric problem is also associated with ingesting too much meat and high fat foods.

23. Heart & Uterus are linked together. Drinking 3000cc - 4000cc of
good filtered water with a healthy detoxifcation diet will help keep
them healthy too.

24. There is no need to go for unnecessary check up. X-rays, CT scans (radiation is 5x-6x higher) are bad for the body as it kills thousands of cells and thus weakens the body further. Cancers & diseases are sometimes quite hard to detect in your Yearly Health checkups or blood tests. By the time they are detected, that particular part of the body has already been quite damaged. Always get a second opinion from another doctor before proceeding with the recommended surgery. If it is Liver disease, medication will destroy it further. Go on a proper detoxification diet and sleep by 9pm daily will help the Liver to recover much faster.

25. Vegetable and Fruits are high in Vitamin Cs which will help
detoxify the poisons in the body, thus helping the organs to recover during the detoxification. Drinking lots of water 2000cc - 3000cc will help the Liver as Urine is one way of detoxification.

26. Morning hours between 5am - 7am is the best time for Bowel movement otherwise the intestines might absorb the poisons from the digested matter to be distributed to the rest of the body and thus slow poisoning of the body will occur. This will result in the body getting sick.

27. Using Kelp Powder mixed in water can help to stop itchy scalp.

28. Stones in gall-bladder, liver, brain, etc.. are usually poisons accumulated from animal protein and oily foods.

29. Minerals - calcium, iron strengthen the kidney/ bladder.

30. A Person having Mild Liver or Kidney problems can eat Fish & Beans Only after 4 months of detoxification diet.

31. If the whites of the eyes are Yellow means You might have Liver & Gall Bladder problem.

32. Red vegetables or fruits are good for the Brain and the Heart.

33. Yellow vegetable or fruits are good for Digestion. Be careful when choosing. Cabbage and Banana are good but they may have lots of pesticides.

34. Low Blood pressure is ok as long as the individual feels fine and healthy.

35. Having Pimples may mean that the toxins in the blood cannot be purged out.

36. Exercise is preferably done in the morning as there are lots of oxygen from the trees . and plants. Night time is not advisable as there are lots of carbon dioxide coming from the trees and plants. Afternoon is too hot . After 40 years old, try to do light exercises like long distance walking and not to do heavy exercises.

37. Having Headaches may mean weak pump of blood/energy from the Heart shows lack of oxygen.

38. Black under eyes means Liver & Kidney are weak.

39. For Arthritis problem, eat High vitamin C , kelp and detoxification diet.

40. People with Breast or Uterine cancer must not eat sea-cucumber or salty foods.

41. High-water content fruits are easier to digest.

42. Exercise is good for the heart.

43. Use as few electrical appliances and household items in your homes. In the long term, they can cause radiation exposure and ruin your health especially your Television set, radio, huge sound system. Don't place them in your bedroom otherwise, you might find difficulty in sleeping thus feeling very tired in the morning . Also, try not to watch too much TV or surf the computer for a long time especially children otherwise in the long run, the radiation from the TV & computer might cause loss of memory and intelligence. Do not switch on the lights in your home or else too much of light exposure overhead might also be damaging to your body especially if you have not been very fit or healthy in your lifestyle.

44. My personal advise: If U want to take a bigger step to a truly healthier lifestyle , please use only stainless, ceramic (without lead), glass for your cooking , eating utensils. In the long run, Aluminium materials will give U dementia . Also get rid of your non-stick pans and cooking utensils as the coating will eventually fade into your food which cause poisoning. Use water to cook your food lightly. Overcooking your food will cause it to lose most if not all of its nutrients.

Re: Medical Advisor for the 40+

MEDICAL INFO: CANCER

Please note the following :

CANCER : Not all cancers are the same. 1/3 is curable. 1/3 is preventable.

2 factors of cancer that cannot be controlled are AGE & FAMILY HISTORY.

CAUSES OF CANCER:

1. Smoking is very often the main cause of cancer.

It kills us silently and drains money from us quietly. There’re 4,000 harmful chemicals (though in diluted form) in one stick of cigarette. Taking one puff is 600 times worse than inhaling exhaust fumes from vehicles.

2. Some foods that cause cancer is :

a. Barbecued Food

b. Deep Fried Food

c. Overheating Meat

d. Food that is high in fat causes our bile to secrete acid that contains a chemical which is a promoter of cancer cells.

e. Food that contains preservatives, too much salt or nitrates, e.g. canned food, salted egg & veggies, sausages, etc.

f. Overnight Rice (where Aflatoxin is accumulated)

g. Food that is low in fibre : Our body needs 25gm of both soluble & insoluble fibre daily. We must drink at least 1.5 litres of plain water a day.

h. Contaminated Food (e.g. moulded bread causes our body to secrete toxins that may eventually lead to liver cancer in the long run. Never eat bread that is kept in room temperature for more than 2 days especially in a humid weather.)

3. Types of fat and which is the best?

Highly Recommended for Health :

a. Olive Oil - It does not absorb in our body.

b. Fish Oil - Omega 3 (contained in NI’s Circulytes) has poly-unsaturated fat. It’s good for our brain cells.

c. Peanut Oil - It contains Vitamin E. A small dosage is recommended only.

4. Not Recommended for Health

a. Vegetable Fat - Palm oil is worse than coconut oil. It is high in cholesterol and highly unsaturated.

b. Coconut Oil - It has saturated fat.

5. Specific Food & Beverages

a. Egg when eaten too much can cause High Colon Cancer, Risk Ovary Cancer, Prostate Cancer.

b. Cabbage is highly recommended for health reason.

c. Tomato is best eaten raw with a bit of olive oil for better absorption. Other alternative is to take tomato sauce.

d. Coffee is good because it contains 2 anti- oxidants. Inhale coffee aroma for half each day is equivalent to eating 2 oranges a day. However, the residue of over-burned coffee is extremely bad for health. It can cause cancer.

e. Tea, as long as it is in its original tealeaves and not processed into BOH or Lipton packets, it is good for health. Tea contains 30 anti-oxidants. Recommended dosage is cups a day.

EXERCISE AND BE FIT

Have a balanced lifestyle. Exercise regularly.

F : Frequency : 3 to 5 times a week.
I : Intensity : Exercise till we sweat and breath deeply.
T : Types of exercises : Find one that suits our age, lifestyle…

HAVE REGULAR CHECK-UP once we reach the age of 45 & above, it is recommended that we go for regular comprehensive health examination. Early detection may save lives.

* Pass it on to people you care of their health.*

Re: Medical Advisor for the 40+

5 FOODS MEN NEED MOST

1 Tomato Sauce – Men who eat a lot of tomatoes, tomato sauce, or pizza smothered with the stuff may be giving themselves a hedge against prostate cancer. So say researchers at Harvard University, who studied the eating habits of more than 47,000 male health professionals. They found that men who ate tomato sauce two to four times per week had a 35 per cent lower risk of developing prostate cancer than men who ate none. A carotenoid called lycopene, which tomatoes contain in abundance, appeared to be responsible. But scientists were puzzled: tomato juice didn’t seem to have a protective effect. Other research show why. For best absorption, lycopene should be cooked with some kind of fat. So pizza may be just what the doctor ordered.

2 Oysters – Myth has it that oysters are the food of love. Science may agree. Just two to three oyster deliver a full day’s supply of zinc, a mineral critical for normal functioning of the male reproductive system. Scientists are divided over reports that sperm counts have declined over the last 50 years and that environmental factors are to blame. Nutritional deficiencies do seem to be the cause of certain cases of low testosterone. Getting adequate zinc is sometimes the answer (up to 15 milligrams per day is recommended for men; more than 40 milligrams can pose risk). In one trial, 22 men with low testosterone level and sperm counts were given zinc every day for 45 to 50 days. Testosterone levels and sperm counts rose.

3 Broccoli – A recent Harvard study finds that cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, may protect against bladder cancer which is common among Asian men. Scientists analysed the diets of nearly 50,000 men and discovered that those who ate five servings or more per week of cruciferous veggies were half as likely to develop bladder cancer over a ten-year period as men who rarely ate them. And broccoli and cabbage were singled out as the most protective foods.

4 Peanut butter – If you want a healthy heart, spread your morning toast with peanut butter. Heart disease is the leading killer of men and women, but men fall victim at an earlier age. Researchers from Pennsylvania State University compared the cholesterol-lowering effect of the step II Diet of the America Heart Association (AHA) with a higher-fat diet based on peanuts. The AHA plan included more carbohydrates. The peanut regimen was 36 per cent fat. After 24 days both diets lowered “bad” LDL cholesterol. But the peanut plan also caused a drop in blood fats called triglycerides and did not decrease HDL, the “good” cholesterol. The AHA diet raised levels of triglycerides and lowered levels of HDL. “Peanut butter is a little higher in fat,” says Penny Kris-Etherton, the lead author of the study. “But it’s the type that’s good for you – monounsaturated fat.” Researchers have predicted that the peanut diet could reduce heart-disease risk even more than the AHA diet could. Just don’t go nutty plastering on the tasty spread, since it is high in kilojoules.

5 Watermelon – Until the age of 55, more men suffer from high blood pressure than do women. Research suggests that foods rich in potassium can reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. The evidence is so convincing that the US Food and Drug Administration recently allowed food labels to bear a health claim about the connection between potassium-rich foods and high blood pressure. “A good goal for potassium is about 2000 milligrams or more a day,” says Antigone Blazos, a lecturer at Asia Pacific Health and Nutrition Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Watermelon is a rich source of this mineral and has more potassium – 664 milligrams – in just one large slice than the amount found in banana or a glass of orange juice. So cut yourself another slice and enjoy its cool taste.

There you have it: five great foods for men that can keep both of you well fed and healthy at the same time.

Re: Medical Advisor for the 40+

5 FOODS WOMEN NEED MOST

1 Papaya – This fruit packs about twice the vitamin C of an orange. Add it to your arsenal against gallbladder disease, which afflicts twice as many women as men. After analysing the blood of over 13,000 people, scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, found that women who had lower levels of vitamin C were more likely to have gallbladder illnesses. One medium papaya (about 280 grams), with 188 milligrams of C and a mere 500 kilo-joules, is a refreshing source of the vitamin. Best of all it’s probably growing in your garden.

2 Flaxseed – Bakers use this nutty-flavoured seed mainly to add flavour and fibre. But scientists see the tiny reddish-brown seed, rich in oestrogen-like compounds called lignans, as a potential weapon against breast cancer. An exciting report at last year’s San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium showed that adding flaxseed to the diet of women with breast cancer effectively slowed tumour growth. You can flavour your muffins with flaxseed, but the easiest way to get the beneficial lignans is to sprinkle a few tablespoons of ground flaxseed on your morning cereal. Look for the seeds in health food shops. They’re easy to grind in a blender or coffee grinder. But get seeds – there are no lignans in the oil.

3 Tofu – Foods high in soya protein can lower cholesterol and may minimise menopausal hot flushes and strengthen bone. Isoflavones, plant chemicals in soyabeans that have a structure similar to oestrogen, may be the reason. Though animal studies form the bulk of evidence, a human study found that 90 milligrams of isoflavones was beneficial to bone (specifically the spine). And two other studies suggest that 50 to 76 milligrams of isoflavones a day may offer some relief from hot flushes. Half a cup of tofu contains about 25 to 35 milligrams of isoflavones.

4 Pork – Due largely to menstruation, women tend to be more anaemic than men. And low iron levels in blood can cause severe fatigue. To get a good dose of iron, try pork. It has what every diet-conscious women wants – lots of iron and fat that can be easily removed, compared to most cuts of meat. According to the Asian Food Information Centre in Singapore, a palm-sized pork steak has about 1.4 milligrams of iron. Best of all, says Dr Mark Wahlqvist, president of the International Union of Nutrition Sciences, eating a small amount of pork with a meal increases the absorption of iron from accompanying vegetables and cereals.

5 Cabbage – This humble vegetable may help fight osteoporosis, which affects many women late in life. In addition to getting adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D, some studies suggest that vitamin K may have a bone-protective effect as well. Based on data from one of the largest studies of women, the Nurses’ Health Study, researchers discovered that women who ate enough vitamin K-rich foods (at least 109 micrograms of the vitamin daily) were 30 per cent less likely to suffer a hip fracture during ten years of follow-up than women who ate less. Researchers point out that dark-green leafy vegetables – brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli – are all good sources of the vitamin. But cabbage is among the best.

There you have it: five great foods for women that can keep both of you well fed and healthy at the same time.

Chinese Herb Medicine FAQ

Dr. Lingling Li, OMD in China
Dr. Lingling Li graduated from a prestigious Oriental Medical college in China with a MD in Chinese Medicine degree 15 years ago. She has been practicing Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Prescriptions and Chinese Massage since then. She is a National Board Certified Acupuncturist & Chinese Herbalist and a Pennsylvania Licensed Acupuncturist.

We have received many questions from our web site visitors regarding Chinese Herb Medicine. Dr. Li reviewed these questions. Those very common and important questions are selected and answered by Dr. Li. The following is those FAQ and Dr. Li’s answers:

Q: What is the Chinese herb?
Dr. Li: In China, people have been using natural herbs to treat a wide variety of diseases and conditions. These herbs are called herbal medicine, which are composed of roots, bark, flowers, seeds, fruits, leaves, and branches. It is well known that Traditional Chinese Medicine has over 3000 years history and Chinese herb medicine is one of most important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine which also includes acupuncture. In China, there are over 3000 different herbs that can be used for medical purposes. However, about 300 to 500 of these herbs are commonly used. It is important to use herbs grown in China rather than outside of their native environment. One must use the right herb from the right source to get the full benefit.

Q: What can Chinese herbs do for me?
Dr. Li: Chinese Herbal therapy or herb medicine has three main functions:
1. treat the acute diseases and conditions such as killing bacteria or a virus;
2. heal chronic illness such as gastrointestinal disorder, respiratory disorder, allergies, immune system deficiency, etc. by strengthening the body, helping it to recover;
3. maintain daily life health by keeping the balance of human body.

In general, herbs can treat a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Comparing with chemical medicine, Chinese herbal medicine is much more gentler and safer because it is made of natural herbs. Most of Chinese herbs do not cause side effects. Even some side effects that do occur among a few herbs, those side effects can be easily counteracted with other herbs. For these reasons, people turn to herbal therapy for a number of indications. More and more people rely on Chinese herb medicine as alternative after chemical medicine failed.

Chronic illness treatment - As we know, many people with chronic illness may take a number of different conventional drugs daily. Chinese herb medicine is a very good alternative for those who are looking for a natural alternative for the conventional western medicine. There are many very efficient Chinese herbal patent medicines and prescribed herb formulas for the medications taken for pain syndromes, gastrointestinal disorders, neurological disorders, stress related syndromes, respiratory disorders, heart problems, sexual dysfunction, allergies and immune system deficiencies, as well as replacements for antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Side effect reduction - As mentioned early, Chinese herbs are safer and less side-effects. Actually they can be taken to reduce the side effects of other medication such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, etc. It is well known that antibiotics weaken the immune system. Herbal therapy can strengthen the system. Also, during chemotherapy, the white blood cell count drops, which causes fatigue, lack of energy and appetite. Herbal therapy has proven quite successful in relieving the side effects of chemotherapy.

For prevention - People may take Chinese herb medicine for disease prevention. For instance, for a person suffering from frequent headaches, taking herbs to prevent the headache from ever starting is a much better option than taking a pain reliever after the fact. Herbs are also used to prevent the flu, menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome, among other things. For health maintenance- Herbal therapy can also be used for general health maintenance. Tonic herbs are used to increase energy and to slow the aging process. They are also used for enhancing sexual energy and for cosmetic purposes. Herbs arc also used to treat minor symptoms that are not severe enough for heavy chemical drugs, symptoms that cannot be diagnosed by Western medicine, and symptoms and illness that are not easy to treat, such as mononucleosis and immune system deficiencies.

Q: Have herbs been processed before use by patients?
Dr. Li: Yes. Chinese Herbs have been processed before use.
Why? First of all, the processing can reduce any possible side effects of herbs by detoxifying the herbs. The second reason for processing herbs is for filtering out impurities such as dirt and sand. Another reason is the processing can soften the strong taste or smell of herbs. Finally, it is very important to address that processing herbs can enhance their functions.

Q: Can you tell me the difference between Chinese patent and prescribed herbs?
Dr. Li: Chinese Patent herbs are premixed herb combinations according to the traditional formulas developed by experts in traditional Chinese medicine through over 3000 years. They are similar to over-the-counter-drugs and usually in the form of pill, capsule and liquid. The advantages of Chinese patent herbs are convenient, ease to take, less expensive. However, patient's symptoms must fit the patent herb's narrow indications.
Prescribed herbs are mixed by a herbalist according to an individual patient's symptoms and diagnoses. In general speaking, prescribed herbs are more effective than patent herbs because the prescribed herbs are tailored to your symptoms and conditions exclusively by your herbalist if he or she is very good at traditional Chinese medicine.

Q: Can I buy Chinese patent herbs from herb store directly?
Dr. Li: Although Chinese patent herbs are relative safe and have less side-effect, I do not recommend you buy Chinese patent herbs from herb store or other channels without obtaining advice from a certified herbalist.

Q: Are the concentrated herbs as the same good as the raw herbs in prescribed herbs?
Dr. Li: Yes! The concentrated herbs are made from the raw herbs. First of all, best herbal sources from China are selected. Then these raw herbs are purified. After that they are processed through steaming, cooking, finally condensed into fine granular particles. Therefore, they are easy to be dissolved and absorbed and enhance the healing process.

Q: Why Chinese herbs are always mixed in formula to use?
Dr. Li: Chinese herbalists usually do not prescribe single herb for their patients. Chinese herbs usually are used in combinations of 8 to 15 herbs. There are three major reasons to support the combination practice. Mutual Reinforcement involves combining two or more very similar herbs together to create a stronger effect. Mutual Assistance is the way to use one herb to help another work better. Mutual Restraint is meant to use one herb to reduce or eliminate side effects of another herb in the combination.
All of these demonstrate that a herbalist should be experienced and knowledgeable about herbs before attempting to combine them. Otherwise, Mutual Inhibition occurs when one herb reduces another's Effectiveness; Incompatibility occurs when the combination of certain herbs produces side effects or becomes poisonous.

I received many emails and phone calls regarding where to buy single Chinese herb. I think that Many of people in the United States misunderstood Chinese herb medicine when they tried to use single Chinese herb to treat some diseases and conditions. One of the most important advantages of Chinese medicine is the power of mixing.

Q: Could you offer me some precautions while I take herbs?
Dr. Li: Like anything else you put in your body, you should be taken a certain amount of caution when you take Chinese herbs. For instance, some herbs are too strong for pregnant women and may cause miscarriage. Certain foods can have adverse effects on the herbal therapy. In general speaking, when taking Chinese herbs, one should avoid food that is raw (fruit is okay, but vegetables should be cooked), greasy, strong tasting or smelling, difficult to digest (such as beef), or irritating to the digestive system (like spicy foods). It is always a good idea to get advice from a herbalist before you take Chinese herbs.

Q: How are herbs taken?
Dr. Li: As you know, prescribed herbal medicine is traditionally taken in tea form. Human body absorbs tea easily and quickly so it is the most commonly used method. Sometimes, if the smell or taste of the herbal medicine is unpleasant, capsule or tablet form of this herbal medicine is recommended. Tea should always be warm, and capsules or tablets should be swallowed with warm water. Generally, it is best to take herbs just before you serve meals. You should consult a herbalist for specific instructions on taking herbs. For example, tonic herbs, to promote health, are best taken before meals. Purgative herbs, to cleanse the system, are best taken on an empty stomach. Herbs that either irritate the stomach or are taken to protect the stomach should be taken after eating. Herbs for insomnia and other sleeping disorders should be taken at bedtime.
