Man wearing nothing but koteka (penis sheath) climbs huge Jakarta billboard to protest against organ trafficking
Not much was known about the daring billboard climber, other than the fact that he was holding an Indonesian flag and that he was wearing nothing but a koteka, which is a traditional Papuan penis sheath. He also unfurled banners that seemingly protest against organ trafficking. A photo taken from another angle shows more banners that give more clues as to who he is. We can gather from this picture posted on Pasangmata.com that he’s protesting about some kind of injustice committed by authorities on the island of Adonara, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). There is currently no update as to the man’s identity and whether or not he has come down from the billboard. However, this incident is strikingly similar to one that happened on December 9, 2016. Back then, a man named Agustinus Woro aka Martinus from NTT scaled a huge billboard in Grogol (very close to Slipi) and unfurled a banner that also protested against organ trafficking. After he eventually came down, Martinus told the media that he was specifically protesting about the death of his 17-year-old nephew in NTT. According to him, authorities ruled that his nephew died in a accident, but Martinus believes that he was a victim of something more sinister because there was no evidence that his nephew actually died in a motorcycle accident. |

After dominating Bali headlines for the past week, Saudi Arabian King Salman has wrapped up his holiday in Bali. The king left Bali on Sunday, flying on to Japan for an eight-day vacation in one of the world’s most famous tourist resorts. The day before, 16.6 tons of cargo were flown out to Japan from Bali on a Saudi plane. The royal’s departure shut down Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport for a reported 45 minutes, delaying 18 flights, according to Antara. His arrival had similarly caused delays. “Thirteen of those flights were domestic flights, while the remaining five were international,” Ngurah Rai spokesman Arie Ahsanurrohim said on Sunday. The king and an entourage of more than 1,000 came to Bali on March 4 following a trip to Jakarta for a state visit during the king’s Asian tour. The group was spread out across luxury hotels in the island’s south, including the Mulia, The Laguna, Bulgari in Uluwatu, and the St. Regis, where King Salman himself was staying. |

Buddhists caned under sharia law for the first time in Aceh
Indonesia’s only province to impose sharia law caned Buddhists for the first time Friday, after two men accused of cockfighting opted for punishment under the strict Islamic regulations. Alem bin Suhadi, 57, and Amel bin Akim, 60, both ethnic Chinese and members of the Buddhist minority, were whipped in front of dozens of local officials and residents in the city of Jantho, Aceh province. The two men grimaced as they received nine and seven lashes respectively on their backs, a sentence that was mitigated because they had spent over a month in detention since police nabbed them for cockfighting in Aceh Besar in January. “When they were arrested, two chickens and Rp 400,000 of betting money were confiscated by the police,” said prosecutor Rivandi Aziz. Caning is common in Aceh for breaking the province’s strict Islamic laws, for offenses ranging from drinking alcohol to gambling to gay sex. In the past, only Muslim residents could be caned but that changed in 2015 when Aceh’s regulations were overhauled. Non-Muslims who violate Islamic law can either choose to be tried under the national legal system or sharia. The two Buddhists would likely have faced jail under Indonesian nation law. “We live in Aceh, so we have to obey the regulation in our region,” Alem told AFP shortly after being caned. A Muslim was also lashed seven times for betting on cockfights Friday, while another man accused of abusing three teenagers was lashed 112 times. Aceh, on Sumatra island, began implementing sharia law after being granted special autonomy in 2001, an attempt by the central government in Jakarta to quell a long-running separatist insurgency. Islamic laws have been strengthened since the province struck a peace deal with Jakarta in 2005. |

Drugs smuggled into Indonesia via Malaysia and Singapore
Semarang (ANTARA News) - Malaysia and Singapore are transit countries for illicit drugs smuggled into Indonesia, according to Chief of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Commissioner General Police Budi Waseso. "The fact is that narcotics from various countries to be smuggled into Indonesia make transits in the two countries first," he stated here, recently. At least 11 countries have supplied illicit drugs to Indonesia, Waseso noted. More than 60 types of drugs have entered Indonesia. Waseso expressed disappointment over the fact that illicit drugs could easily be smuggled into Indonesia from these two neighboring countries. "I am annoyed to such an extent that I am reluctant to establish cooperation with Malaysia and Singapore. There is no point in establishing cooperation, if it offers no benefits," he emphasized. Drug traffickers have targeted Indonesian students to destroy the countrys younger generation. Central Java and Yogyakarta are categorized as regions prone to drug abuse. "The market share is big, particularly Yogyakarta, as a city of students," he remarked. Indonesia views drug abuse as a real threat, as the country has about four million drug users. According to the BNN data, drug abuse is the cause of 33 deaths every day in Indonesia, mostly young men. Indonesia is one of the few countries to have imposed the harshest drug laws in the world. The country had executed 14 drug convicts in 2015 and four last year. President Joko Widodo had declared that Indonesia was in a state of drug emergency and vowed to not grant clemency to drug convicts despite protests from several countries and parties at home. Last year, the BNN had dealt with 807 illicit drug cases across Indonesia and arrested a total of 1,238 people, including 21 foreigners. The agency also confiscated 6.2 tons of dried hashish, 1.16 tons of methamphetamine, and 765 thousand ecstasy pills. |

Bali Police is launching an app so you can file reports directly from your phone
“Right now, we are just socializing the app, we haven’t launched yet,” he explained. Bali Police is launching an app to make themselves more accessible in the event of a crime, traffic accident, emergency, or any other situation where you would need to get in touch with the police. Instead of going all the way to a police station, app users can directly submit reports to police and can even track the progress of their reports through the app, according to Bali Police Information Technology Commissioner, I Gusti Gede Harnawa Pasimpangan. At the moment, the app, called ‘Salak Bali’ (Bali Police Service Application System), doesn’t appear to be available for Apple users in Indonesia, but can be found in the Android store. Hopefully that will change, as Pasimpangan just said on Tuesday that the app hadn’t even officially launched (though Coconuts Bali was able to access it in the Android store). |

Chain-smoking TWO-year-old, now aged nine, kicks his 40-a-day habit
Chain-smoking TWO-year-old, now aged nine, kicks his 40-a-day habit and becomes the star pupil at his primary school
The two-year-old boy who became an international sensation after he was found chain smoking in a remote village has kicked the habit, lost weight and is now the "champion" of his primary school. Aldi Rizal shot to fame in 2010 after he was discovered in a poor village in Sumatra, Indonesia, puffing 40 cigarettes a day while riding his tricycle. Just two years later the little boy managed to quit with the help of the Indonesian government providing special rehabilitation, but he replaced his smoking addiction with food and drastically gained weight. Now, at nine-years-old, Aldi has managed to keep away from cigarettes, lose weight and excel at school. |
